OUR ACADEMIC CONFERENCES
Academic Half-day
Every Wednesday morning of office practice, we have dedicated academic lecture sessions called “academic half-day” which last for the whole morning. Residents have no clinical duty for that morning and can focus on academic learning only. Topics for in-training exam, board preparation, landmark trial review, high value care, and system based learning topics are taught in a relaxed small group atmosphere, led by the program director and associate program director.

Scholarship sessions
Focusing on noon-conferences at lunch time can occasionally be hard in busy residency schedule. As physicians, patient safety is always our top priority. On the other hand, we cannot jeopardize the education of our residents. In 2021, we implemented Scholarship Sessions, which merged much of our group learning into one afternoon each week.
Every Wednesday afternoon from 1:30 p.m, to 4:30 p.m, scholarship sessions include a mix of intern basic skill lectures, resident reports, faculty lectures, external specialty lectures, journal club competitions, medical knowledge jeopardy games and resident business meetings. CMEF faculty and Chief Residents plan months ahead for each scholarship session.
Career and financial planning guidance are also very important for our residents. Our alumni in different fields as well as physician experts often conduct lectures and share their experiences in scholarship sessions.

POCUS Training
Integration of technology into our daily practice is an important aspect general internal medicine training. Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) is a crucial and useful tool. In CMEF, we developed a hands-on POCUS training course led by CMEF core faculty. To encourage POCUS skills, each resident has access to multiple portable units, including hand-held Butterfly IQ ultrasound units for both inpatient and outpatient settings. Interesting findings can be recorded, stored on the cloud and discussed with our POCUS faculty leaders. At conclusion of residency, we have opportunity to have POCUS course completion recognition which is helpful in job pursuits.
